Did'nt see the Situation

I have flown in to Newark NJ many times. So my opinion of New Jersey was simply that of Newark, dirty Jersey and the occasional channel surfing and seeing Jersey Shore. This does not leave much to the imagination of what I thought of NJ. But we have a new appreciation of New Jersey and finally understand why it’s called the Garden State. In September we spent a week photographing the French/German made horse box in Gladstone at the Olympic Equestrian training center with Olympic athletes.

Only 40 mile from Newark is a green rolling hill farm landscape that reminds you of time past. White 4 board fences and quaint townships a perfect location for this high end design horse transport.

Ocean tides to an 8 second ride. This is the second shoot

we have created for Good Ride Clothing Co.

The first being a studio illustration. The concept to show a little peek

into each lifstyle from surfing to rodeo. All did a fantastic job props, killer jeep,

sweet cycle and great models including "tiny" the coolest dog we have

had on any shoots.

The images will be utilized in print media and in store displays.

PPNCF is an organization of professional photographer that together help set standards in educating the industry in Marion and Alachua counties as well as the consumer of what professional lighting, composition are, and how professional creative photography works in both a commercial level and fine art portriats for the home. One of the ways we challenge each other is to summit our work in a theme category and General category for critic and judging by our fellow piers. It has been several years since entering, but inspired by Sheila's drive to become a better professional photographer and her commitment to earn her Florida degree of photographic excellence she entered her first print and pushed me to enter again as well. Sheila entered her first image in the Themed category. In both the images selected our clients were very pleased and although the image did not win, her image of Clay Parton was very well received with many positive comments and feedback, "A stylish modern portrait". I watched Sheila as her competitive and artistic spirit came alive. I entered in the General category an image of a young guitarist called "scream" and won first place. With a pie eyed look, notice was given to me by Sheila she is going to beat me next time. So the challenge is on only to make us better professional photographers for you and explore new professional techniques that will create new styles. So I say to you Sheila "Bring It.

It’s been a while since my last post. The reason, well it’s simple, we have been a little busy product illustrations, catalogs and some very cool editorial work. While you’re at Paddock Mall doing your Christmas shopping you can see one of the illustrations we created for the College of Central Florida.

To create this movie style poster for the college we shot the students individually so that we could control building the group and the position of each student. The clock tower is created from 5 different exposures and captures to achieve the final image.

I love what I do. Think photography everyday and create. Explorers and spelunkers is an image created to have a 1960's 70's feel when being outside building forts and exploring the neighborhood woods was an adventure.

Niagra Falls "Man, thats a lot of water"

Hired to photograph scenic’s of Niagara Falls for tour books and posters, our first day started out rough, rain over cast skies and a worried art director. Even though it was raining and a tight shoot schedule, I tried to put our art director at ease. “Not all the images have to be sunny blue skies, we may like it if we get some dramatic sky as well, let go and shoot in this overcast rain ". Off we went me thinking what did I get myself into shooting in the rain next to the mist of Niagara constantly covering my lenses and a frustrated art director looking at his phone and the weather channel ever second.

With some perseverance we were able to capture a few images. Soaked to the bone we decided to break for breakfast. I uploaded the first couple of images shot of the breaking thunder head and shared; frustration went to joy as Jim realized the choice to shoot in the rain was worth the effort.

By 8:00 the weather started to break. Although it is a frequented destination by many, I will always be in awe of the power and beauty of the water of Niagara.

Have you ever been driving down the road and see a sign that you just couldn’t believe. That is exactly the case while driving to Virginia for a tourism shoot. I looked at Sheila and said did that say what I thought it said, we both started to laugh a turned the SUV around. Berries of North Carolina

Under the blue summer sky of the Blue Ridge Parkway

is a simple pleasure of picking plump berries.

Blackberries Nutrition

Blackberries, like most berries are low in calories and high in nutrients.

Per half cup, blackberries have 37 calories, 9g of carbohydrate and 4g of fiber. Other nutrients in blackberries include vitamins A, C, and K, magnesium, potassium, and fiber. Vitamin A helps maintain eye health while vitamin C promotes wound healing, keeps gums healthy and helps the body absorb iron. Vitamin K, along with magnesium, are important in promoting bone health.

Potassium plays a role in health blood pressure levels.

Blackberry Jam

Ingredients

4 cups crushed blackbe (about 1 1/2 quarts whole berries)

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 box (1-3/4 or 2 ounces) powdered pectin

6 cups sugar

Preparation

Wash 6 half-pint jars. Keep hot until needed. Prepare lids as manufacturer directs.

In large, non-aluminum pot, combine the crushed berries, lemon juice and pectin. Bring to a full rolling boil over high heat, stirring constantly. Quickly add sugar, still stirring. Return to a full rolling boil that cannot be stirred down; then boil, stirring, for 1 minute. (If using a 2-ounce box of pectin, boil for 2 minutes.) Remove from heat and skim off any foam.

If preparing jam for the pantry, ladle into one hot jar at a time, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Wipe jar rims with a clean, damp cloth. Attach lid. Fill and close remaining jars. Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes (15 minutes at 1,000 to 6,000 feet; 20 minutes above 6,000 feet).

If preparing for freezer or refrigerator, ladle the jam into clean jars (or freezer containers, leaving 1/2-inch headspace); apply lids. Let stand for 12 to 24 hours at room temperature; freeze or refrigerate.

Makes about 6 half-pints.

n. In both senses also called bilberry.

1. Any of numerous plants of the genus Vaccinium, having white to reddish, urn-shaped or tubular flowers and edible blue to blue-black berries.

2. The fruit of any of these plants

Bluberry Muffins

Ingredients:

12 1/2 ounces cake flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

2 teaspoons baking powder

Heavy pinch salt

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 egg

1 cup yogurt

1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries

Vegetable spray, for the muffin tins

Directions:

Preheat oven to 380 degrees F.

In a large bowl sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt and set aside.

In another large bowl, whisk together the sugar, oil, egg and yogurt. Add the dry ingredients reserving 1 tablespoon of the dry ingredients and toss with the blueberries. Stir mixture for a count of 10. Add 1 cup blueberries to mixture and stir 3 more times. Reserve the 1/2 cup of blueberries.

Using a #20 ice cream scoop, add the mixture to greased muffin pans. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of berries on top of muffins and press down lightly. Place into the oven and increase the temperature to 400 degrees. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, rotating pan halfway through. Remove from oven and turn out, upside down on tea towel to cool completely. Serve immediately or store in airtight container for 2 to 3 days.

A study in the best Ad design

It’s a known fact when it comes to advertising there is only a short window of opportunity to capture the attention of the intended audience. I guess we all have some form of ADD. In Advertising Age magazine I once read a quote, "you only have 1.2 seconds to capture your audience before they turn the page". I recently posted a statement " If you're not a fan of a lot of text and copy in your advertising or design, then a picture is truly worth a thousand words".

There are some very important consistent that come to light when studying award winning ads. But more important studying the advertisements that get noticed and create brand recognition. After all that is the ultimate goal of any advertising, creating brand recognition.

Below is a link to one of my favorite web sites. As you go through national and international award winning ads, a pattern starts to form with 3 factors:

1. Creative thinking / Concept

2. One primary dynamic visual image

3. Minimal text with optimum placement

We all know this is the short formula and there is a lot of work and creativity that goes into making a complicated process look clean. However, it is the combination of simplicity and a dynamic image that delivers your message quickly and effectively. After all, 1 Mississippi 2 Missi, is fast and you either caught the attention of the potential consumer or the page was just turned. You may consider me bias but after you review the advertisements in this web site you will come to the same conclusion. In an economy that needs driven results. Make great choice in your concept, design and most important the image you present.

Cyclist Beware

Sheila and I are avid cyclist. She is fast, me not so much. There is something appealing to completing a 30 to 100 mile ride with friends. Before going out there are a couple of thing to consider, for instance traffic, just one on the thing to worry about. While doing this illustration for Hannah Jewelry (even though it is not the intention of this ad and in store poster) as I was given the art direction, I could'nt help to be reminded of a few other things that I worry about on our bike rides.

There is a sense of ahh and tradition standing at the edge of the tunnel leading out from the U of F locker room to the Florida field. Even though it is not football session and there is an eerie quiet in the stadium during this time of year, it seems you can stand and hear Gator Nation yelling,

This is from a shoot with the mfg. of the lockers and show cases. We had only 1/2 hr to create about 15 different angles. Plus clean and prep the areas before shooting.

Lost

Ok, I have to admit it, I always prided myself with being one of those guys’ whose not to proud to pull over and ask directions. So recently while out shooting an assignment in Levy County I found myself, LOST.A few problems no one to ask for directions and I mean nobody in sight, and my GPS couldn’t find the address I was looking for, yet after many u turns, dirt roads, the faint sound of banjos and looking at an old fashion map I found the location. After leaving the early morning shoot I found myself traveling in a very rural part of Florida with the most beautiful scenic farm scapes. Lost but worth it.

About a week ago I went out to meet a line crew in Lake Pannsofckee Florida, to get a understanding of exactly what a line crew with Nelson's does and see the equipment they use. This assignment, to photograph a line tree crew for Nelson's corporate marketing division out of Dayton Ohio, was going to take a bird’s eye view or squirrels view would even be a better explanation.

I had the idea of shooting bucket to bucket to get a unique prospective. On the first attempt to get in position the ground operator said "I can’t get you in position from here, I'm going to have to invert you." With one eyebrow raised I said "What", but put my trust in the crew and after going 70 ft up completely extending the arm of the lift, we positioned the bucket for a great image.

After waiting two weeks for US Customs to release the French made transport and 2 straight days of rain with puddles the size of small lakes, a client frustrated with the delays and a crew and models on call and ready to go, we finally photographed the "Horse Ault". We could'nt ask for a more beautiful day, blue skys, puffy white clouds and fields of green winter rye. As any good shoot should be we made freinds, we worked hard, we laughed and we learned a little french.

From the moment you meet Dr. Anna Marie host of the Weather Channels, you can’t help to be captivated by her compation for eco living. "Terra Verda" her farm under construction is an eco friendly testing ground for companies installing power producing system such as WePower turbines and construction techniques using recycled material.

Sheila and I had a wonderful time photographing her for an upcoming feature article. What would you expect from a shoot with a Weather Channel host? Start out the day with a few sprinkles to the sky, opening up to a great deep blue sunshiny day. Do you think she had some inside weather info.

We decided to use a pin wheel / prop as a symbol for green eco living. Part of any shoot is reacting, as you can see we keeped being visited by Bucca her black lab and not to let him feel left out we photographed Dr. Anna Marie and Bucca on the hill. Some times you just go with it and get great results.

Sign Sign every where a sign

A few years back we had to take down our well dated sign. It was a typical 1970 ish sign built of wood painted grey and molded red plastic letter, sounds eye catching huh. When we started to remove the old wood a treasure was discovered. My dad's original 1950’s neon sign from his studio on Charles street. When he moved from the downtown location to our present location, they had removed the sign from the side of the building and welded it on the existing pole that also was discovered behind the old grey wood.

Looking at this treasure and a sucker for mid century design I knew instantly what need to be done, restore the sign. This prompted me to my new project "signs". Signs with unmistakably character ,that if they could speak, would be like sitting next to an old friend.

This morning just like it was on cue, with coffee (aahhh) in hand, I opened the door to head to work, and was hit with cool breeze a sure sign November was here. For me when you feel that first sense of fall. I'm instantly reminded of family and the great color palette that comes with season.

In the 60's and 70's Ocala's down town was the hot spot for retail. I can remember (crap I’m getting old) my mom taking me reluctantly upstairs of the JC Penny's for those back to school cloths. At that time 5 or 6 six years old, I feel certain that I had better things to do than shop for school cloths. After all it was a time when we rode our bikes every where, the neighborhood football or baseball game, but certainly not the torture of

taking a child to buy back to school cloths.

Down town is alive again with all kinds of unique stores and restaurants. The newest addition to downtown is Stella's. A relaxing and inviting look back at a store with a Modern Twist. It beckons to take you back in time to a simpler way of life yet with high style treats and an unbelievable selection of unique kitchen cookware, stylish platters and trays to ingredients to make your own culinary temptations.

The brain child of Stacey Atsides and Pastry master Albert Barret, Stella's will be a great addition to the downtown vibe. After all anything that looks as cool as this store will certainly find success.

Ocala's Got Talent

I'm constantly reminded by the lyrics of an old Fleetwood Mac song, " aint pretty can't sing and my leg are thin", that I truly can't dance, can't sing and as far as the anit pretty thing well just say I was given a gift to photograph,(thats why I'm on this side of the camera and not the other), but that is the opposite of four talented individuals we recently worked with.

Ocala Talent and Modeling sponsored an event to find some of Ocala's most talented and they excelled in this event. The talented singers Lauren Henry, Aytia Borgas, Meagan Steedman and Isebella, took the top four spots. These guys buble over with personality and draw you in with their infectious smile, laugh and artistic talent. From Pop to country these four can sing.

We created each a image campaign for their comp cards and promo cd covers to help promote them in May 2010 in a national talent and modeling showcase. So here you go get a sneak peek before this talented 4 some make it big.

The Empire Strikes Back

Over the past couple of months I have been working with some great friends from Aero graphics on a tour book for the Empire State Building. This is obviously not a assignment you want if your afraid of heights. From crawling out windows on the 72nd floor ledge to scissor lifts in the lobby to top of the rock (Rockefeller Bldg. - NBC) shooting the Empire State Building (ESB) has been a fun challenging experience.

There is always a sense of awe and amazement at such a classic icon. It truly stands majestic. As one NY city cab driver said " The ESB is the icon for America, we love that building". Its elegance and history have been an amazing adventure for all of us involved in this project. But one image created above all other stands to be the highlight. As I said you can not be afraid of heights. First let me describe the 103rd floor.

Traveling by 2 sets of elevators to get to the 86 floor and then switch to the last elevator, which is still the original 1933 elevator. You arrive on the 102 observation deck. From there you take two small flight of stairs(more like a ladders that stretch up to a small mechanical room), and find your self in a small cramped space. To access the 2ft ledge with a 2 ft knee wall and yes the 2ft knee wall is all that is between you and a quarter mile drop, you must step out a small window.

Lets just say once out there you don’t make any sudden movements. While on the 103rd floor shooting Lisa and I looked back at Jim frozen, white as a sheet, sitting inside the small mechanical room. Jim said " my feet they wont move, I dont like this much I think I will stay in here untill you are finished". But Jim also knew this was a once in a lifetime opportunity stood up and put one foot out on the ledge. I was able to capture Jim's momentous accomplishment, with few other images. Jim's foot was the only part that can say " I stood a quater mile above NY city".

We have all been there; you know what I’m talking about that feeling that comes over you. You look through the pantry search all the cabinets and yet nothing sweet to eat. That is what living with a personal trainer is like. Broccoli and green beans just won’t satisfy that sweet tooth. So when the opportunity came for me to photograph sweet treats around town, I thought alright. From mile high pumpkin pie to chocolate delights of Betty cake. The opportunity to indulge into the World of Willy Wonka was at my grasp. But instead of feasting on cakes, muffin and pie, a little trainer sat on my shoulder and said “I don’t think so buddy”. The only joy of indulgence was photographing the sweet delights and getting the opportunity to share with you. So please enjoy!
